Are peptides legal?
There is no single legal status for “peptides.” Some peptides are approved prescription medicines. Others are still experimental. Some may be prohibited in competitive sport. The answer also changes from one country to another, and sometimes depends on how a product is prescribed, sold, or used. Here, you can check the current status of ten commonly searched peptides. Every result links back to the regulator or official record behind it.

Approval stops at the border
A medicine approved in one country is not automatically approved everywhere else.
Every national regulator reviews products independently. Bremelanotide is a useful example: an approved medicine is available in the United States, while no equivalent approved product was found in Canada’s drug database. European Union results are shown only where we have verified the relevant EMA records.

Prescription rules can change by state
Can an online clinic prescribe after only a questionnaire?
FDA approval is decided nationally. The rules governing how a prescription may be issued are often set at state level. Our review found 24 states where a questionnaire alone generally does not satisfy the examination or consultation requirement. A prescriber must first establish an appropriate clinical relationship with the patient. California is a notable exception: its rules identify a questionnaire as one possible way to satisfy the examination requirement in some circumstances. An uncoloured state does not necessarily allow questionnaire-only prescribing. It means we did not find a general statewide rule clear enough to summarise here.

Are peptides legal in the United States?
It depends on the peptide, and on what someone is doing with it. Some peptides, including semaglutide and tirzepatide, are active ingredients in FDA-approved prescription medicines. Others have no approved human drug product. Approval, prescribing, selling, importing, possessing, and using a substance in sport are separate legal or regulatory questions. A peptide should therefore be checked by compound, product, location, and intended use.
Is BPC-157 legal?
There is no FDA-approved BPC-157 medicine for human use. That does not mean every legal question about possessing or studying BPC-157 has one simple answer. It does mean that products sold online as BPC-157 are not FDA-approved treatments, and a “research use only” label does not turn them into approved medicines. BPC-157 is also prohibited under World Anti-Doping Agency rules.
Does a “research use only” label make a peptide legal?
Not for human use. The label indicates that a product is intended for laboratory research rather than treatment. It does not establish that the product is safe, effective, lawfully marketed as a medicine, or suitable for use in people. Regulators look at how a product is actually marketed and intended to be used, not only at the disclaimer printed on the bottle.
Does peptide law change from state to state?
Drug approval is generally decided at the federal level in the United States, so FDA approval does not change when you cross a state line. Other rules can change. States regulate medical licensing, prescribing, telehealth consultations, pharmacies, and parts of drug compounding. The same medicine may therefore be approved nationally while the process for obtaining it differs by state.
Are peptides banned in sport?
Some are; others are not. The World Anti-Doping Agency prohibits several peptide hormones, growth factors, related substances, and non-approved pharmacological substances. BPC-157, for example, is prohibited at all times. Athletes should check the current WADA Prohibited List and the rules of their own federation before using any medication or supplement. Approval as a medicine does not automatically make a substance acceptable in competition.
Why can a peptide be approved in one country but not another?
Each regulator makes its own decision. Companies may apply in one market before another, submit different evidence, seek approval for different indications, or decide not to launch in a particular country at all. Review timelines and regulatory standards can also differ. That is why an FDA approval does not automatically create an approval in Canada, the European Union, or anywhere else.
