What peptides are

Short chains of amino acids. A few are approved medicines; most of what is discussed online is not approved for human use. Here is the honest distinction.

A peptide is a short chain of amino acids — the same building blocks that make up proteins, just fewer of them strung together. Your body makes thousands of them. Insulin is a peptide. So is the hormone that tells your stomach it is empty.

When people talk about "peptides" online, they usually mean synthetic versions being studied for effects on metabolism, tissue repair, skin, or growth-hormone signalling. That is a very broad bucket, and the single most useful thing a newcomer can learn is that the compounds inside it are not equivalent.

The distinction that matters most

Peptides fall into roughly three groups, and they are worlds apart in how much is known about them.

  • Approved medicines. A small number have been through full clinical trials and are approved by regulators for specific conditions — semaglutide and tirzepatide for weight and glucose management, tesamorelin for a specific HIV-associated condition. These have human trial data, known adverse-event profiles, and a licensed prescriber attached to them.

  • Investigational compounds. Some are in active human trials but not approved — retatrutide is the current example. There is real human data, but the picture is incomplete and the compound is not authorised for general use.

  • Unapproved compounds sold for research. The largest group by far — BPC-157, TB-500, GHK-Cu, and most of what circulates in forums. These are typically sold labelled "for research use only", have no approved human use, and in most cases no controlled human trials at all.

What "research use only" actually means

It is a legal and commercial label, not a quality standard. It signals that the seller is not offering the material for human consumption. It says nothing about what is in the vial, how pure it is, whether it is sterile, or whether anyone has studied what it does in people.

This matters practically: an unapproved compound has no standardised dose, no approved indication, no pharmacist checking interactions, and no manufacturer accountable for what you received.

Why quality varies so much

Approved medicines are made under pharmaceutical manufacturing rules and dispensed through regulated channels. Unapproved compounds are not. Two vials with the same label can contain different amounts of different things. That is why the sourcing question — what is actually in this vial, and who verified it — is not a side issue.
